Making small incremental changes to have a big impact
It’s all too easy to look at a process and decide it is very big, complicated, or overwhelming to tackle. In this post we explore how do you improve processes.
But if you break it down into smaller pieces it will become more manageable. These smaller pieces then become changes that collectively will improve the overall process. By making small changes we slowly shift towards a desired state. Better yet, if we continue to make small incremental changes we will benefit from Kaizen (meaning good change).
Over the years, I’ve made small incremental changes to my life which I believe have a wider impact on my teams and the customers I work with. Here is a list of my favourites; what little wins have you made in your life?
- Regularly laugh at yourself.
- Reuse what you already have.
- Tell someone they are amazing.
- Lock your computer with Windows+L.
- Do something nice for other people.
- Look up and marvel at the world around you.
- Combine errands to save time and energy.
- Take photos to remind yourself of achievements.
- Zoom in/out of web pages by pressing Ctrl+scrolling the mouse wheel.
- Do something active when you take a break (I like axing wood).
Write a list of actions and start with the highest priority item.
If you make small incremental changes over time then the resulting collective impact will be much larger!
